A super delayed piece for an awesome close friend I've met in March. C:

I've tried several different poses and city layouts; the pose turned out to be lovely, but the city is kinda generic. ^^; Also, the street isn't that messy and alley-ish as I imagined, but that's how we learn I guess. ^^ I do plan to draw her sometime later, as she has quite an interesting story and character, which I'd love the express in future pieces.

This was a rather challenging picture, given its setting, lighting and atmosphere. I wanted to put her into a dieselpunk-esque world, but couldn't pull it off well, the only thing resembling the genre is the police cruiser. No problem though, I'll work on it in the future.

I've tried a different technique this time, having the colours on an overlay with the greyscale layer underneath. I think I'll stick to it, as I have the shadows and highlights on the same layer, which is much easier to "paint".

Unfortunately, this "complexity" (size, layer count) was too much for my shitty old PC, so I the end, I had to work with a flattened image, with only three layers. Thankfully, a new rig is on the - far - horizon, so this won't be an issue any more.

Enjoy! :dummy:

I am so jealous of the composition of this. That background is freaking amazing! I wish I had your skills D:

No need to be jealous, there's an awful lot of trial and error behind this composition. I think I tried three or four different ones, not counting the small changes I did later on.
Thank you very much! It was my first take on complex backgrounds, and I though I've bit more than I could chew with this idea, but it really didn't turn out as bad as I was worried about.

Oh, I don't think I have anything special in this that can't be achieved without a little practice in perspective or colour use.

Oh my, thank you so much! C:
It is surprisingly easy to achieve look, actually. No need for fancy brushes / textures or a lot of layers, it's all in the method you play with tones. I'll do a tutorial for it, I just have to decide which one is the perfect piece for it from the WIP ones. ^^

Yeah, I've learned that clean lines aren't for me, so I decided to go on with a rougher inking style. I feel much more in control now, as I don't have to put a lot of effort into something I don't necessarily aim for.

I love it!  You did a superb job on the lighting and perspective.  I know you expressed disappointment in not being able to show more dieselpunk elements or that the alley wasn't alley-ish enough.  On the contrary, I think it is the subtitles of both these things that makes this piece truly captivating.  I think you did fantastic!

Oh, thank you! C: Well, it's kind a of learning cycle, and I'll surely get it more right-ish next time! I'm glad you like as it is now, means I still managed to capture the atmosphere I was aiming for, especially given this was my most complex picture by far. ^^

It was a real treat watching some of the different stages to this along the way. You really gotta stop peppering the description with critiques though - it turned out absolutely gorgeous and no one looking at it will think otherwise. You silly thing.

Nah, I need to point out mistakes so people commenting will either confirm it or say it's just me worrying too much. Either way, I find them very helpful. ^^

Thank ye so much! Yeah, both were super-challenging, but I'm happeh they turned out lovely. ^^  Dammit, I need to draw a REALLY dieselpunk city now ... something from ... Italy, anyone? ;)

I really like the setting in this one; the city looks relatively safe, as the alleyway doesn't really look like an alleyway, it's much too clean.
However, that gives me the idea that the city itself is like a concrete utopia where crime is very low and production is very high. Consequently, security is very low and therefore creates opportunity for thieves.

Given our shady looking racoon character here, ducking the cops, I would say I am close in accuracy. :)

What I also love is how you made the color bleed range from a sickly looking aqua (a common city night light color) to a faded amber (also a common city night light color) splitting the image between the dark underbelly of society and the ideal image of urban life.

Aaaaaaaand if I were to submit another 2 cents, here would be the sound: www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFwTS3…

Oh, thank you! C:
Hmmm ... I haven't really put this in that kind of perspective, but it really does make sense! It even fits the character and her setting more, than having a run-down city. This kind of contrast also works well with the graphical decisions of the picture, so yeah, I love your interpretation!

Yeah, I wanted the achieve the exact thing with lighting and colours. The amber light is indeed the common colour of the busy city streets at night, while green / aqua - or any vivid coloured - light is often seen in the signs of cheap clubs or stores ... or that was my line of thinking.

Hmm ... I like the tone of the music, though it would fit a cyberpunk world a slightly more.

Thank you again for taking your time to analyse the picture, I REALLY appreciate it! ^^

The sort where I close my eyes and can easily transport into the world, formulating the culture, lore, history, everything. Thanks to the videogame influences in my life, I envision something mixed with Bioshock, Abe's Oddyssey, and Sly Cooper, with perhaps a little Legend of Zelda thrown in..... Gotta love dem boxes!

This looks awesome! The pose looks great and hes got a good smug expresssion. Amazing backdrop to. I'm eyeing that copcar with the 6 wheels and im like La la la la La la la la La la la la HELL YEAH!!!! I dig stuff like that x3 Really cool how it still has the retro look still as well. Reminds me of a Ford Seattle-ite xxi

Thank you so much! :la: I've tried several poses, but I think it was worth the trouble to get her right. ^^

Oh yeah, I had great fun drawing that piece of metal. It's a result of inbreeding a 1960 Plymouth Fury, a 1965 Ford Crown Victoria and the Tucker Torpedo ^^ The world I've put Aiden is supposed to be a 1960's retro-futuristic one,  hence why I came up with this silly design.
Yeah, I've read about that car! I love the idea of the having multiple front wheels, because you do see two-at-front four-at-back layout often, but not the opposite!
